THERE will be 102 teams taking part in the week-long West New Britain Sasindran Muthuvel Cup from May 13-17 in Kimbe.

As a lead-up to Lae 2014 and the West New Britain 2016 PNG Games, Governor Muthuvel, pictured, launched the Muthuvel Cup Games Charter at the Kimbe Independence park yesterday.

The launching came after Muthuvel presented K10,000 to the games committee last week to start preparations in eight  sports – basketball, soccer, rugby union, rugby touch, softball, netball and kickboxing.

The cup challenge will be the third in the province’s annual sports calendar apart from the district and provincial games.

“The games set out to improve sportsmanship in the province and targets the untouched population in discovering talent all throughout the province,” Muthuvel said.

The management committee led by Patrick Mavihi, pictured right, confirmed the successful launching of the games and the interest shown by business houses in the province.

The committee said a number of business houses in the province agreed to sponsor the games in cash and kind, with Aigon Clothing contributing an undisclosed amount.

Ela Motors will be sponsoring uniforms and some trophies, while Paradise Mart has made a commitment to supply refreshments for the games and WNB Steel & Fabrication will be chipping in on the first week of May.

All 12 LLGs of West New Britain are set to take part in the games. Mavihi said team registration fee and affiliation would close on April 26, and all payments must be deposited into the Sasindran Muthuvel Cup Games BSP account.

“There will be no acceptance of cash payment and every team will be expected to pay through the account,” said Mavihi.
