Business

THIRTEEN people completed a two-week course run by the Mining Department of the University of Technology (Unitech) in Lae on occupational health, safety and risks in engineering for business on Friday.
Department head Dr Gabriel Arpa described the course as important because health and safety should be addressed with diligence in working places.
He said safety and health were important issues which organisations must be conscious of, and training must be provided to employees so that they promote safety measures at all times.
The department and the university have been running the course every six months since 2010.
Arpa told the participants that the certificates they received were worth the money they spent because they were now in a better position to identify hazards, manage risks and safety to prevent hazards from happening.
Trainer and instructor Bill Miname said occupational health and safety were important components of any organisation.
“The three key concepts of safety management system are input, process performance and output measures in any organisation or industry.”
