THE eviction exercise to be carried out by the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) at 14-Mile on portion 1221, Milnich of Granville, 4-Mile, Central, has been halted by the NCD/Central Command pending a court order sought by settlers.
Assist Comm of Police NCD/Central Commander Anthony Wagambie Jr said he had stopped police involvement for the time being in order for them to seek further advice.
The National arrived at the eviction site and was met by police and settlers.
According to information received on the ground, the community leaders went to Waigani Court House with a lawyer to seek an interim restraining order.
The settlers who were left behind spoke with the police, saying they would not continue their planned march to the gates of the Adventure Park but they wanted police to wait for their community leaders.
On Friday, Central Governor Robert Agarobe had raised the plight of settlers living on portion 1221, during grievance debate in Parliament.
He said the portion of land was located in the Koiari local level government, Kairuku-Hiri district in Central and shared a boundary with the Adventure Park and the Pacific Adventist University. Agarobe questioned the acquisition of the land for NCDC via a direct grant. But NCD Governor Powes Parkop said the eviction was in order.

  • Mr governor parkop, is that how you continue to evict your own country men, women and children with out proper care and due diligence on the grounds that they are our own people. Governor Agarobe, you are a Papua New Guinean leader, a leader who stood by his people regardless of where they come from. Parkop is no longer the voice of the people of ncd. He has displayed total arrogance on humanity ground he stood for and won elections. Mr Parkop I don’t live there, I drove pass 14 mile in the morning and seeing their distress, anxiety and anger I felt for my people, my country men, women and children. You caused them unnecessary pains and worry. You caused enough pain. 14 mile people, don’t forget this event, election is around the corner. You will make the correct decision in 2022.

  • Its a question of whether they are legal or illegal settlers. Do not deviate from the issue at hand.

  • We have left far too many settlers unaccounted for as a result we are facing issues far worse than illegal settling.

  • How did the NCDC get that land and how did it hand up Adventure park? If the company has not being operating, than the land goes under the custody of Registrar of Companies, this process has to be clear and transparently done.
The community their also has a point so let them end it in court amicably.

  • It’s sad to see families being evicted but this is long overdue. Better late than never. The Government needs to curb the current trend of squatters erecting houses wherever they feel like. Settlements are creating a lot of problems in the city, not only in terms of petty and serious crimes but also hindering proper city planning and development.

  • Verily, its sad to hear that.
There as to be other way, NCD governor. Be a MAN who is for his own country PEOPLE. How could you stand against your own people and let foreigner to come in… Is it not enough..? CENTRAL PROVINCE Offered there land to build the CITY..? How SAD, you are fighting hard to remove what belongs to them…
Its time for change, however, there as to be another way…
