STEAMSHIPS Trading Company on Sunday hosted its 20th annual STC Intra-Company Rugby Sevens tournament which saw teams from its divisions flying in from Mt Hagen, Lae and Madang to participate.
A total of 14 teams from each of Steamships divisions participated in the one-day event, to play for the managing director’s shield, general manager’s shield and the manager’s cup.
The competition was very tough with equal skills displayed from all the teams.
However, Shipping One who had players like Robert Nandie and Rolland Tanda, proved they were a solid team to beat when they made it to the finals to play for the much-coveted managing director’s shield and beat Lae Team  One 28-24.
The winners of the general manager’s shield were Lae Team Two who trashed the Hotels Two with a 12-0 scoreline.
The manager’s cup was wrestled out of the grasp of the Hotel Team One by Datec who won the cup with a 17-0 victory.
At the end of the tournament, Steamship’s finance director and the head official, Eddie Ruha, said he was impressed with the boys’ performance and commended all the team officials and managers for their tremendous support.
“The tournament has developed a lot over the years within the Steamships group and the attitude displayed by the players and team officials is very impressive.
“I challenge each team official to make next year’s competition bigger and better for their staff,” he said.
Steamships managing director David Cox said every year the competition gave the male employees the chance to take on their workmates in a spirit of friendly, rivalry and highlight the strength and cohesion of the group.
He said the competition enabled a great deal of enjoyment and the opportunity to meet and network with players from other divisions.
