28 Rigo teams battle for Wala Gamu Cup

TWENTY-eight teams from Rigo central and coastal are competing in a four-day soccer and netball competitions which will coincide with this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
The Wala Gamu Cup challenge, launched yesterday attracted 15 teams from Rigo coastal playing in Hula and 13 sides from Rigo central, competing in the Sivitatana area.  
The event started yesterday and is expected to end on Thursday with major sponsors Wala Gamu chipping in K86,000 to run both events.
Gamu thanked both villages for hosting the event which was the biggest tournament to be held in the district.
An overwhelming crowd showed up at Hula for the start of the tournament in both areas of the district yesterday.
“In the past, MPs from these areas had always chipped in to host games during annual holidays, however this year, the independence celebrations was not on the agenda, therefore, I chose to assist the youths through sports rather than involving themselves with anti-social activities,” Gamu said.
In yesterday’s soccer matches in coastal Rigo area, Hula Two flanker, Rene Kila scored the first goal in the 12th minute to lead.
But Gemo’s striker Renagi Tau  equalised in the 32nd minute to level the score 1-1.
In the other matches, Makerupu and Babaka drew while Kalo and Babakarubu were also held to a draw.
However, Kamali thrashed Galomarupu Visigo 2-0 with goals coming from  Galoga Tamo in the fourth minute and Kule Walo in the 22nd minute.
In netball encounter at Rigo coastal, Hula Two defeated Gemo One 24-15, with sister combination of Kiri and Vavine Va’a in superb form scoring 24 points between them.
Gamu said the winners of both the Rigo inland and coastal would play a final match in December with the winners walking away with K10,000 in prize money.
He also added that he would continue to sponsor next year’s event.
