A UNIVERSITY of Technology (Unitech) student in Lae’s Taraka was stabbed when more than 30 men raided the girls’ dormitory on Friday, commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban says.
“The intruders broke into Unitech’s Rainforest Habitat dormitory and robbed the students of their valuables and laptops.
“The student was stabbed with a pocket knife when she tried to call out for help,” he added.
Kunyanban said the robbers climbed the fence to gain access to the dormitory.
“Security is of paramount importance, especially when an institution or company have women students or employees. Looking at the trend of criminals, they are now going around in large numbers,” he said.
He warned institutions and business houses to ensure their security systems or arrangements were adequate and efficient.
“Work with us to help contain such situations,” he added.
He pointed out that West and East Taraka and areas around Igam Stone Gate were areas where criminals were getting together in large numbers at night. Some use vehicles in their attacks.
“We are now into the general election period and we will be providing security. However, it would be good for public, institutions and private businesses to have effective communication with police to minimise unforeseen circumstances,” he said.
Kunyanban said police would do its best to ensure law and order in the city but “the public must cooperate.”
