Over 3000 complete financial literacy training in Vanimo

MORE than 3000 people from Vanimo, in West Sepik, graduated on Thursday in the financial education training programme, according to the Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion.
The training was conducted under the microfinance expansion project.
The project is supported by the Asian Development Bank and the governments of Australia and PNG.
Rex Tawian, from Horizon Consulting, who were the training partners in Vanimo, said financial literacy was important to the nation.
“It is important that we continue to bring these trainings to the people. People should have the skills and knowledge on how to save and budget to be able to use the services and products provide by financial institutions and to better their lives,” Tawian said.
He said the demand for training in the province had increased.
“Training has been carried out for villagers, students, staff from the provincial government, and inmates from Vanimo Correctional Centre.”
George Awap, the manager financial systems development of the Bank of PNG and project director of the Microfinance Expansion Project, presented the certificates.
“The financial education training that was conducted by the project will help people make better decisions on how they make and spend money,” he said.
“The graduates now have the knowledge and skills to be part of the financial sector, and financial services will be more accessible to them.”
