FOUR women have been arrested in Mt Hagen for selling betel nut and bags in the city last Friday.
Inspector David Kongua of the community policing unit said the officers had since May been helping the city authority in enforcing its rules.
He said as a result, Mt Hagen city was much cleaner and safer now.
Kongua warned those who broke the city authority rules would be arrested.
“We are targeting street vendors, people committing petty crimes and those that break the city rules,” Kongua said. We will not tolerate any wrong-doings.
“These women were found selling betel nut and bags after an awareness carried out earlier warning people to refrain from these activities.”
William Noki from the Jika Malakamb clan in Mt Hagen has praised police for what they were doing.
He said the surrounding communities were noticing the changes in the city and thanked provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Martin Lakari for using the community policing unit to assist the city authority.
He said it was an excellent initiative by the police, which must continue.
“Rubbish is being dumped at the right location and people are starting to maintain the laws,” Noki said.
He said the laws were there to be followed.
“The good work of police needs to be supported at all costs because people are witnessing changes.”
