SPORT is a big part of the 40th Independence celebrations in the National Capital District.

Under the initiative of Governor Powes Parkop, pictured, sports competitions which started three weeks ago have been run for a 40-day period leading up to September 16.

Competitions are held at major suburbs.

Parkop introduced the sports contests during this period to help communities celebrate Independence.

The National Capital District Sports and Community Development manager Kila Dick said K50,000 had been allocated for the NCD Governor’s Carnival Cup.

Dick said three sports were being played.

Canoe racing which ended on Monday; volleyball and netball competitions began yesterday; tomorrow will see asiasi (small canoes) sail off at Taurama beach in the city’s east.

Dick said volleyball and netball were allocated K15,000 each, canoe racing K10,000 and asiasi K10,000.

Cash prizes for the champions in the sports are K3000; runners-up K2000; third place K1000; fourth place K500.

Dick thanked Parkop for recognising youths and getting them involved in sporting activities during the Independence period.
