‘50pc of women in informal sectors’

WOMEN contribute to over 50 per cent of the country’s informal sector, says Centre for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) country manager Eli Webb.
“Our informal sector is so high and the portion of that which is occupied by women is over 50 per cent,” Webb said.
“The micro small medium enterprises (MSME) market is huge because most of the businesses are conducted informally.”
Webb said with these high numbers, women needed to be empowered in terms of financial literacy and measures needed to be taken to help build and sustain their businesses.
She said that CIPE was trying to help by providing training and capacity building through its Women’s business resource centres programme.
