An average of 60 people register for National Identification (NID) each day at the Vision City Mega Mall in Port Moresby, says an official.
Civil registry officer Mae Salowe said the registration process started in May last year.
“We have continued the registration during the festive season and into the New Year,” he said.
“About 60-65 people were registered each day and were assisted by seven officers from 9am to 2pm.
“We help people fill their information in the application form, do corrections and then send to our colleagues for data entering into the system.
“Once the system has registered their personal details, we issue the registration number and the collection date for them to follow up at the main office in Waigani.
“There are many benefits if a person has access to the NID card.
“It will help them access funds in the bank, travel, apply for a job and other services if requested for proof of identification.”
There are no exact figures of the total number of people who have registered so far.
Registration statistics as of Feb 13, 2018, show 365,830 people having registered.
The Government plans is to get everyone registered by 2021.
