THE district treasury roll-out programme initiated by former finance minister Bart Philemon has now covered 61 of the 89 districts in the country, according to Chief Secretary Manasupe Zurenuoc.

He thanked Finance and Education Minister James Marape and staff for making sure that the district treasury programme continued.

He said it began in 2004-05 and already covered 59 districts.

The opening of the Chuave and Karimui-Nomane district treasuries brought the number of districts with treasury offices and houses to 61.

“I call on Treasury staff to be accountable to the people and government to deliver service to the people at the district level. District treasury must not be stumbling blocks,” Zurenuoc said.

Marape thanked Philemon for wanting to bring services closer to the bulk of the population in the districts.

Chimbu Governor Noah Kool said such important programmes would open up opportunities for changes with improved infrastructure.

The event was witnessed by Chimbu administrator Joe Kunda, other members of parliament and public servants.
