Polio vaccination programme teams in Southern Highlands have immunised 72,000 children under the age of five out of the 89,000 children targeted, an official says.
Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority public health director George Epei that despite the bad weather, teams sent to the districts did a great job.
“Because of the bad weather last month, we could not go to Bosave in Nipa-Kutubu district, which is only accessible by air, and Wabisale in Kagua-Erave district,” Epei said.
“But luckily four teams have reached the area and are feeding us with information.”
He said the remaining 17,000 children were from those two areas. The polio vaccination programme was launched on Aug 27.
The teams had to stay back for five days because of the bad weather and transportation problems.
“Our partners (Unicef and WHO) were not happy with the progress. I had to urge the teams that by Wednesday we should be getting some good results,” he said.
“So on Wednesday, we reached 28 per cent, a positive progress.”
