SEVENTY-five ABC students of the Maranatha Christian Academy, in Tokarara, Port Moresby, graduated with reading readiness last Friday.
School administrator Ellepe Nomi said it was a first of its kind for the young students to graduate dressed in gowns so parents could know they had passed the reading readiness chapter.
She said the young children could now read simple journals and newspapers and pronounce words correctly.
“This is one of the oldest ACE schools in the National Capital District and we do not mix our curriculum with the public schools but we follow the American curriculum,” Nomi said.
“We receive our school materials from Australia and the United States  and we go through sounds and phonics with the ABC students who are seven years old to build the foundation and make them read in order to proceed to higher grades.”
Principal Joel Rare said the students worked at their own pace in their work book while teachers spent time and supervised students individually.
“It depends on each student on how fast they work on their paces to double grades in a year , and to proceed into the next grade the students have to meet the requirement of 80% and above in their studies,” he said.
