THE people of the Abelam society in Maprik displayed the true Melanesian culture Papua New Guinea style with a big heart.

Maprik MP John Simon, on behalf of his people, presented the visitors and MPs with yams and pigs.

In a show of generosity and “happy-to-do-so” attitude, 16 long yams and eight pigs were given away.

His message to the visiting contingents was to take the long yams back to their place and plant it.

Simon thanked Consort Management for their assistance in transporting the yams.

He told the Solomon Islanders that as next hosts of the festival, they should take the yam back and grow them as long as the one they had received.

The New Caledonians, Vanuatuans and Indonesians were also given a pig and long yam each.
