Abau women all for empowerment
The National – Monday, March 14, 2011
EMPOWERING a woman is to equip a nation, and to educate a girl is to educate a nation.
Abau MP Sir Puka Temu made these remarks when he handed a cheque for K40,000 to the Abau district council of women (ADCW) last Thursday.
The money was part of the K100,000 approved by the Abau joint district planning and budget priority committee (JDP&BPC) for a proposal from the council for its activity plan for this year.
ADCW president Gennie Kapigeno thanked Sir Puka for the support and said the money would benefit both men and women in the district.
She said the council would have activities including training workshops for women and literacy training programmes.
She also appealed to other five districts of the province to establish their own council of women.
Sir Puka said the district was serious in empowering women to be equal partners in developing PNG.
The direction Abau district has taken is in line with the national policy, which is to empower women.
“This demonstrates Abau’s belief that women can actually help themselves,” he said, adding that in Melanesia, women played an important role.
“They take care of the entire community.
“This is part of my belief that women need to participate in all levels of decision making.”
He also said women, unlike men, were more “detailed thinkers”.
