PARALYMPIC athlete Steven Abraham won the award for the best sportsperson with a disability at SP Brewery-sponsored Sports Awards presentation night in Port Moresby on Saturday. This is his second time to claim the award after having won the honour, which is proudly sponsored by City Pharmacy Limited (CPL) Group, in 2019. CPL group chief executive Navin Raju said by sponsoring this category, they recognised the efforts to make sports an inclusive space for national athletes such as Abraham. “We are proud to support the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation, Cheshire disAbility Services, Halfway House and now the SP Sports Awards,” Raju told The National. “This is part of our ongoing contributions to making a better and inclusive PNG.” Abraham, who is considered as a great sports ambassador, has been consistent since his debut and has continued to improve his times while training under coach and former national sprinter Peter Pulu. He was part of Team PNG who performed well during the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, where he won silver, and the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, where he was ranked 5th. Abraham acknowledged Pulu, Papua New Guinea sprinter and heptathlete Adrine Monagi and his teammates. Abraham is training at the PNG High Performance Sport Centre at Sir John Guise Stadium with the other para-athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Games as well as next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
