ACCESS to the Lae’s Angau Memorial Hospital has been restricted since Friday after an unconfirmed number of prison escapees were admitted there.

A statement from the hospital on Friday said visitors were restricted and scrutinised due to the mass breakout.

“Visitors to the hospital will be restricted due to this current difficult situation (mass break out).”

“Genuine patients with clinic books and relatives of very ill patients will be allowed in during the normal visiting hours,” chief executive officer Dr Christopher Kenyhercz said.

“To identify a deceased relative inmate as a result of the mass breakout you will await CIS or police clearance first.”

The hospital management had banned the media from taking pictures and interviewing patients and relatives of the escapees at the hospital.

The hospital also refused to give the figures of how many escapees were admitted at its accident and emergency department.

Doctor-in-charge Alex Peawi and hospital communications officer Desney Koimo confirmed that escapees who were shot on Thursday afternoon during the mass break out at Buimo Prison were admitted to the hospital.
