A 45-year-old woman claiming to be a recruitment agent for overseas firms responsible for selecting seasonal workers in PNG appeared in the Lae Committal Court for allegedly cheating more than 40 people of over K46,000 early this year.
The accused, Lina Kaiwa, from Koilik village in Yangoru-Saussia, East Sepik, appeared before Magistrate Tera Dawai charged with false pretence and cheating.
Magistrate Dawai explained the committal procedures to the accused that the court would give police time to investigate the allegations and provide evidence to be looked at by the court.
The court allowed Kaiwa to apply for bail and had adjourned her case to Aug 17.
Kaiwa had claimed to be an agent of New Zealand Life Science to recruit seasonal workers to work in Australia and New Zealand.
Police report alleged Kaiwa committed the offence on Jan 1. She was in the company of another female at Ahapu, Kamkumung village at Speedway to introduce the recruitment programme to the landowners there.
It was alleged that 10 people had gathered but more were interested.
The accused and her friend briefed the villagers on the requirement and met them again the next day.
While there she allegedly received a phone call from another agent named John Kema in Port Moresby who conversed with the interested applicants and the accused regarding the programme via mobile phone.
After many meetings, the applicants were ready with their necessary documents to travel but were advised by Kema on Jan 6 that the number of applicants should be 40 and not 14.
Police alleged that the 14 applicants assisted the accused to have 40 applicants who paid in sequences and bulk payments of K480 for medical bills, K100 for passport renewals and K150 for new applicants’ passports, K193 for polio vaccination, K388 for visa and K40 for transportation.
A total of K46,322 was deposited to the recruitment programme account but they never travelled with the agents giving so many excuses about travelling time.
The agents drew suspicion among the applicants and they reported the matter to police.
