Address harassment of female UPNG students

Letters

I WAS disgusted when I came across a story about a female University of PNG (UPNG) student being harassed by male students. Apart from the recent incident, many other female students also reported that they harassed as well. It’s clear that harassment is a big issue at UPNG. What sort of male future leaders are we breeding in the “premier university of the Pacific”?What is being done about this issue? These male students’ actions show how low some in a so-called higher education institute think of women. It’s almost as if they don’t care if other people harass and abuse their mothers and sisters. The perpetrators should be terminated from school and never be allowed to attend any higher education institution unless and if they change from this sick mindset and behaviour. I believe with all my heart that men who harass and abuse women don’t deserve to live in civilised communities. They deserve to live with pigs. And it’s the top university of the country and the so-called “premier university of the Pacific”. It’s supposed to be occupied with thinkers, builders and changers. UPNG should really consider enforcing strict rules and systems against the animalistic acts of harassment and abuse. I know there are many good students out there who want to make the world a better place, but that cannot be achieved if we continue to entertain such attitudes. The university should teach some ethics and values system in their courses as Divine Word University does. Some of the students live like animals and need to be trained well to know how to live with respect, love and commitment to serving others.
