SORCERY-related killings and tribal fights are rife in the rural areas of Southern Highlands, a youth leader says.

Joshua Naikima from the Kagua-Erave district said nothing had been done by local MPs and agencies to address them.

He said although there were district police stations, the poor conditions of roads made it difficult for police to travel.

He said it was worse in the Kagua-Erave district which recently witnessed a big tribal fight following the death of former local MP David Basua.

The fight has continued despite a recent visit by former Southern Highlands police commander Supt Sibron Papoto and his officers.

He said public servants in the district were not many because some refused to work there due to its remoteness and the associated law and order problems.

“Other districts are living in peace and embracing development. When will the Kagua-Erave district unite and see development?

“Our local MP must visit the area and make some changes.

“The prime minister, as a Southern Highlander, must do something about the lawlessness and poor roads,” he said.

Meanwhile, a build-up of sophisticated and high-powered guns is threatening development in Kagua-Erave.

Most of these weapons are believed to have been smuggled into the electorate using the back roads of Kikori in Gulf.

The factory-made M16 series, AK47 and rifles used by terrorists in the Middle East are occasionally put on public display at the Kagua police station during compensation ceremonies.
