Madang government administrator Daniel Aloi was taken in for questioning last week for his part in allowing a payment of K400,000 to a local contractor in September.
However, the interview was stopped by police commander Supt Jacob Singura as he had received instructions that procedures were not followed for the questioning.
The payment was processed as the variation cost for maintaining the governor’s official residence near the Kalibobo lighthouse.
Senior Detective Charles Kukari said Aloi was to be questioned for his part in allowing the payment to go through by bypassing accountable and responsible officers and why there was no payment vouchers raised for the first payment of K150,000.
The K150,000 was paid to New Comba Construction in 2016 for the maintenance of the governor’s official residence on a verbal contract.
According to the investigation report, work was not done but a variation report claiming an additional K400,000 for the same work was completed in which Aloi played a part in enabling the payment to go through.
Singura stopped the interview on Aloi, saying there should be an invitation given for the interview but that was not done so he got instruction from the police hierarchy to stop the interview.
