AUSTRALIA’S Ambassador for Women and Girls Natasha Stott Despoja told a group of students in Port Moresby that education and teamwork are a recipe for success.

Despoja, who is in the country for a five-day advocacy trip to promote the eradication of gender-based violence, visited students and staff of the Caritas Girls Technical Secondary School.

She was accompanied by officers from the Australian High Commission where they spent an hour at the school to observe the League Bilong Laif programme which the school participates in.

“Leadership is in the mindset and in doing the right things and involving others,” Despoja said.

“The best advice I can give you is study hard. I know it sounds boring but work hard and work together, especially girls, we must support each other.”

She observed the League Bilong Life programmewhich involves equal participation in rugby league.

“It’s encouraging to see girls and boys participating in rugby together and that rugby can provide career opportunities,” she said.

“If there’s one thing in common that can unite us, it’s certainly rugby. Education, through sports, is a great equaliser.”

League Bilong Laip programme is an initiative to promote gender equality through sports and the programme is supported by the Australian government.
