THE National Cultural Commission is still waiting for the Treasury Department to release funds for the 5th Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival in Papua New Guinea next year.

Commission festival chairman and acting executive director Dr Jacob Simet announced yesterday K53 million was recommended by the government earlier but the figure had to be confirmed.

He said PNG was ready to host the Council of Arts and Culture and the Melanesian Spearhead Group meetings this week in Port Moresby.

“Preparations are under way, and this week’s meetings by senior cultural officers and MSG ministers are a lead up to the festival,” he said.

The CAC meeting begins tomorrow and will be attended by cultural representatives from MSG member countries of Vanuatu, Fiji, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and PNG.

The MSG meeting will be held on Friday in Port Moresby and will be attended by arts and culture ministers of MSG nations, with the inclusion of Timor Leste and Indonesia’s Papua province.
