Agreement to help reduce cost of animal feed

SOUTH Pacific (SP) Brewery has appointed Edai Town Development Ltd to remove beer waste at its Port Moresby factory and distribute to the Boera community to use as animal feed.
This was outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed between Edai Town Development Ltd, SP Brewery and the Boera Holdings Ltd in Port Moresby yesterday.
The Boera community is a partner of Edai Town development where the developer wanted to assist through Boera Holdings Ltd efforts on sustainable farming projects through conversion of waste to feed.
Boera Holdings chairman Sir Moi Avei said their challenge in the village was the cost of imported animal feed and this initiative would be of great help.
“For months and months we have been looking around to see whether we can reduce the cost of the feed,” he said.
Sir Moi said the project converted beer waste to feed that would otherwise continue to increase strain on limited landfill space.
“Edai Town Development Ltd will collect spent grain from SP Brewery and distribute to Boera community to use directly as animal feed,” he said.
“It will also assist the Boera community to convert spent grain to feed through rearing of black soldier fly larvae to produce high content fat and protein for fish and livestock.”
Sir Moi said the waste from the black soldier fly larvae would be used as organic fertiliser for food gardens. “This will achieve import substitution, replacing cost of imported animal feed and chemical fertilisers.”
He said they also wanted the villagers to be actively involved in economic development.
SP managing director Stan Joyce said they tried to be sustainable and it was important that waste product had a use.
“It’s a very exciting innovation,” he said.
“The waste can be converted to chicken feed.
“So instead of the waste just being dumped, it now can be used for something else.”
Meanwhile, Edai Town Development chief executive officer John Chia said they hoped the initiative would be a leader in the country.
