Agri park promises millions from produce

MINISTER for Commerce and Industry Wera Mori has urged Wawin Land Development Holdings (WLDH) Ltd to submit a detailed business plan in order to obtain tax-free status.
Mori told the WLDH and a group of Singaporean investors (SG1) in partnership with Morobe government to set out their business activity plans clearly, get registered with Investment Promotion Authority (IPA) before submitting documents to him for consideration.
According to investor, SG1 team leader Dr Chia Fatt, the potential annual turnover from agricultural produce in Wawin was estimated at more than K700 million based on usage of improved technology and partnership with Wampar farmers.
“Based upon your detailed information, I can recommend to Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) and taxation office to grant a tax exemption,” Mori said.
The SG1 is determined to develop Wawin land owned by the provincial division of agriculture and livestock (PDAL) into a major food production hub in the short to medium term.
“We have signed a memorandum of agreement to ensure we implement Government investment aspirations,” he said.
Mori said the initiative shown by the Morobe government and the SC1 was a positive step in developing the agricultural potential of Markham Valley.
Mori said he would recommend to the National Executive Council to declare the land from Yalu (Huon Gulf) to Umi Bridge (Markham) a special economic zone for agricultural activities.
The Wawin Agriculture Park is the first establishment.
Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu said that developments at Wawin would set the basis for an agricultural revolution in the province and the country.
