FORMER councillors in Nebilyer, Western Highlands, have formed an association supported by Trukai Industry to venture into agriculture and livestock activities.
Paul Wak, who served as councillor of Yumbiga ward for more than 30 years, told The National that about 70 members had formed the Nebilyer Former Councillors’ Association and had included interested farmers.
He said Trukai Industries supplied the association with equipment, including milling machines and ploughs, and rice, soybean and sorghum seedlings.
Wak, who thanked Trukai for the assistance, said Nebilyer had a reputation for lawlessness, especially with tribal fights and councillors and local leaders had tried to find ways to get the people to focus on activities that would benefit them and the district.
“We have taken the lead to go into farming and raising livestock to attract our youths to support us and do away with illegal activities.”
Wak said the association had planted the rice, soybeans and sorghum and hoped to harvest the crops in the first quarter of 2021.
