 AGRICULTURE is high on the agenda of the alternative government policy presented to Parliament yesterday by Opposition leader Don Polye.

He said that in a lengthy document presented to Parliament which brought strong response from Prime Minister Peter O’Neill

“The Opposition’s policies have been designed as the backdrop of the impacts of the great global recession acerbated by abruptly falling oil and commodity prices and the desperate desire for better economic management to create that sustainable economy for PNG,” Polye said.

“Other factors that have been taken into consideration are: that the majority of PNG’s population lives in poverty in rural parts, corruption and kleptocracy are very rampant in PNG and public service machinery almost defunct. “The constitution and laws, the systems and institutions of State, are being compromised for personal gain, hence the Opposition’s policies giving a hope for a change for the better.”

Polye said the Opposition’s eight policies were:

  • Skills industry growth plan;
  • integral human development strategy/policy;
  • modernisation of the country’s public service;
  • development of money culture and a debt market growth in PNG;
  • creation of  a sustainable economy for PNG;
  • personal viability, self-management and bodily care;
  • all everyday livelihoods of the people; and
  • Reforms in foreign relations and diplomacy of PNG.
