Agriculture in aviation needs cargo terminal to transport, store produce

THE country needs a cargo terminal warehouse to facilitate the import and export of goods especially agriculture and fisheries products, an official says.
Jerry Karl, of Outback Aviation Ltd, told the 2019 commodity board retreat in Port Moresby this week that the cargo terminal warehouse was needed to handle cargo exclusively.
Karl said the Government had set up the blueprint of bringing markets to the farmers which meant certain players were needed along the way.
The Department of Agriculture and Livestock has spearheaded a project called “agriculture in aviation” to provide guaranteed markets for farmers and offer better price than what is offered locally.
“We have agriculture production, we have agricultural produce and we have the agriculture market both domestic and international,” he said.
“We try to link the components.
“However, we need to understand the obstacles we are faced with.
“So long as we understand those obstacles, the linkage is there.
“We have the problem to bring agriculture and fishery products from other province.
“That’s the domestic problem that we have.
“I’m relating to product related to aviation.
“For this project, we want to establish why healthy prawns from the Sepik River or mud crabs from the Kikori Delta are not reaching the Port Moresby market?
“Fresh produce from Mt. Hagen and Goroka cannot be found at Gordon market. If you cannot reach the street markets, then there is a problem here.
“We need to understand these problems and address them head on. From an aviation perspective, a cargo terminal warehouse is very critical in every terminal anywhere in the world in order for agriculture and fisheries products to get out.”
