ANY talk of a military takeover in Papua New Guinea is not only false but irresponsible, PNG Defence Force commander Brig-Gen Francis Agwi said on Tuesday.
Following the constitutional and legal developments late on Monday and the subsequent political responses, there were rumours that a military coup could be an option to get the nation back under control.
But when approached about the comments on radio stations, Agwi said: “The defence force neither seeks, nor would accept any part to play in the politics of this country”.
“The PNGDF has no political position and takes no political sides.
“It makes no difference to the PNGDF that the judiciary and the legislature make rulings that affect the composition of the government. That is robust democratic process.
“Defence will always be the servant of the democratic process and the government of the day.”
Agwi said, regrettably, there were some people in the community who saw fit to advance their own agendas by suggesting that some members of the PNGDF were capable of interfering in the political process.
He said for that reason, he enforced a PNGDF-wide camp shutdown to limit the scope of outsiders trying to exploit PNGDF personnel.
“I appeal to all Papua New Guineans to treat talk of a military coup with disdain,” he said.
“I am proud that the PNGDF has focused only on serving the nation, in Papua New Guinea, in Solomon Islands and now in global UN peacekeeping.
