Aid delivery on hold

THE distribution of relief aid in Hela has been suspended for a stocktake and to review its coordination.
Provincial disaster committee chairman and Governor Philip Undialu said it was part of “reassessing and planning before supplies run out and we create another disaster”.
“We need to take stock of what has gone out, how many people have been served already,” he said. “I also want to hear from the national controller what supplies are coming next.”
The killing of a Tari councillor contributed to the suspension of relief aid.
Provincial administrator William Bando told The National that relief aid had been suspended as a show of respect for the late councillor, and to take a stocktake of the 110 tonnes of relief supplies already delivered to the three districts of Hela.
“That stocktake was completed (on Monday),” he said. “We also did a post-mortem of distribution, looking into which areas got how much, and which areas we are yet to reach.
“It now appears that we’ve reached all the areas that needed to be reached. But there are areas in the Hulia-Benaria LLG that needs regular attention.
“We also need to pay more attention to Mt Bosavi and parts of North Koroba.”
