Aid for flood victims
The National, Thursday February 25th, 2016
NATURAL disaster victims in Jiwaka will now receive relief assistance from the National Disaster Centre and Oxfam International, provincial disaster coordinator John Kupul says.
Kupul told The National that affected areas were Wara Kar and Wara Mombol where flooding and landslides occurred.
Both in the North Waghi district.
He said he visited the affected area and submitted a report to the National Disaster Centre and Oxfam and other organisations for relief assistance.
Kupul said the National Disaster Centre, after going through the report, gave K50,000 to the victims.
He said the money was deposited into the provincial trust account and he was waiting for the authorities to release it.
Kupul urged the authorities to release the funds quickly because the affected population, more than 1000 people, needed relief supplies urgently.
He said most of them had nothing to survive on as their food gardens and homes were destroyed.
Kupul said Oxfam International, a non-governmental organisation, stepped in with the non-food items which included 100 water containers (20 litres each), a carton of aqua tablets for water purification, two large canvas tents able to accommodate 20 people each, 100 boxes of kitchen sets and 100 boxes of drinking cups.
Kupul thanked Oxfam International and the National Disaster Centre for responding quickly to people’s plight.
