INDEPENDENT Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) agents play an important role to ensure there is compliance, an official says.
ICCC Commissioner and chief executive officer Paulus Ain was speaking during the conclusion of a week-long workshop and induction training in Port Moresby on Friday for business development officers (BDOs) from East Sepik, Chimbu and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
He said the BDOs would act as ICCC agents.
Twelve participants (six BDOs and six provincial administration officers) participated in the induction workshop and training aimed at equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform duties and responsibilities on behalf of the ICCC.
“Section 7 (1) and 106 (c) of the ICCC Act empowers the ICCC to liaise with government agencies on matters relating to consumer protection,” Ain said.
He said resource constraints had the potential to restrict the commission’s efforts and respective provincial governments in maintaining an effective system of surveillance on prices and service standards of goods and services and ensuring compliance with the laws administrated by ICCC.
The workshop and training were aimed at promoting an effective cooperation between the ICCC and provincial governments.
