AIR Niugini’s Jet Fokker 70 recommenced flights into Nadzab Airport in Morobe starting on Monday, an official says.
Chief executive officer Bruce Alabaster said they had opened with four flights a day for Fokker jet aircraft into Nadzab and aimed to bring in the Boeing 737 by July when maintenance work on the runway was completed.
Nadzab redevelopment project director Tom Nou said a total of 1,800-metres of the airport runway works had been completed and handed over to the National Airports Corporation (NAC) on Sunday.
He said the Nadzab project, which started last year, was more than 50 per cent complete and expected to be completed by April next year.
Nou, giving an update to the members of the Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday, said the redevelopment would be 90 per cent complete by end of year.
“The project is progressing well and on target despite the challenges of the Coronavirus and delayed materials,” he said.
“We’ve also taken into consideration the elections and weather; but we have a very good team on the ground that is ensuring that we achieve our target of having this project completed before April 2023.”
Nou said Nadzab was the only NAC facility being redeveloped under a funding arrangement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
