AIR Niugini has resumed its jet operations using its Fokker 70/100 aircraft to Tokua airport in East New Britain.
According to a statement from Air Niugini, flights resumed following the completion of urgent maintenance work on the airport runway by the National Airports Corporation.
Since Feb 21, Air Niugini services to Tokua were downgraded to Dash 8 aircraft including some scheduled changes to Hoskins, Kavieng, Buka and Rabaul to cater for maintenance work.
The maintenance was expected to be completed in April, however due to continuous rain in the area and other issues, it took an additional two months to complete.
Air Niugini operates a daily service (two flights) to Rabaul, operating direct from Port Moresby to Tokua airport, as well as via Lae, Hoskins, Buka, Kieta and Kavieng.
Also I-Link PNG, a subsidiary of Air Niugini operates three weekly flights to Rabaul via Lihir Island according to Air Niugini.
