AIR Niugini resumed flights to Wapenamanda Airport in Enga last Thursday.

It halted services last Monday following two deaths and an uproar at the Aipus oval between fans of rugby league teams on July 7.

“The decision to resume flights was made after further assessment and monitoring of last weekend’s violence in the area,” Air Niugini said in a statement.

“Police and the provincial authorities have guaranteed that the situation has been quelled and is now under control.

“The first flight, PX 990, resumed services into Wapenamanda airport on July 11, with another flight, PX 990, at 7am on July 12.

“Safety is always of paramount importance in Air Niugini’s operation.”
