Aisaga loses first bout, judo misses out
The National, Monday July 28th, 2014
Andrew Aisaga, Papua New Guinea’s first boxer to compete at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, lost his bout to Maduranga Don Pathirage of Sri Lanka on Friday.
Fighting in the men’s 69-kilogramme, Aisaga lost all three rounds on each of the three judges’ cards to come up short with scores of 27-30 thrice.
The bout seemed to be competitive over the first two rounds but Pathirage lifted in the final round as Aisaga slowed.
In other Glasgow news, judo athletes, Ashaan Nelson and Kinsley Vui in the men’s 73kg division, put up good performances to win their preliminary fights before losing.
Both athletes were knocked out in the second round of fights and missed out on securing quarter-final berths.
Judo coach John Jambert said the performance by Vui and Nelson was better than expected.
“I’m pleased with their performance in that they were up against some of the world’s best,” Jambert said.
