Aitape youths surrender homebrew-making materials to police

THE excuse that a person needs to make homebrew to sell to make a living is insane, Aitape Town mayor Ian Welisai says.
He urged youths during a gathering at Yakoi village where they surrendered homebrew making materials to police last Thursday that they were an important part of society and could either build or destroy their own communities.
He said most of the youths had given the excuse that they depended on the production and selling of homebrew for their daily needs.
“This excuse of selling homebrew to earn a living must stop as there are many ways for young people to make money and help their own lives,” Welisai said.
He said the youths surrendered five gas cylinders to police and signed a village court agreement that they would abstain from producing and consuming alcohol.
Welisai said if they produce homebrew or consume it again they will be subjected to the law.
“Our town was once a peaceful and quiet town until homebrew was introduced,” he said.
Welisai said the production and consumption of it by especially young adults had contributed to a lot of social issues in their local communities.
He appealed to other communities to refrain from producing and consuming homebrew.
