PNG Orchids Elsie Albert was named the best forward by sponsor Oil Search for her performance over the weekend against the Brisbane Broncos at Sun Corp Stadium, Australia.
This was Albert’s debut appearance for the Orchids and she was grateful for the experience.
The 21-year-old managed to score a try in their first trial against a well-structured Broncos defence but eventually lost 48-14.
“I never thought that I would represent my country, to play at this level,” Albert said.
“Playing rugby was a hobby but it took me to another level and I’m proud to put on the Orchids jersey.
“I would like to thank Oil Search for the award, it feels good to be recognised for my effort.”
Albert said she only started playing the sport this year.
The Southern Highlander is a first-year student at the University of Natural Resources and Environment in East New Britain.
“I played for the Cowgirls in the UNRE competition,” she said.
It was from there that Albert went on to represent the New Guinea Islands for the recent Confederation Championship in Port Moresby.
During the tournament, she was spotted for her talent and was selected for the Orchids squad.
Orchids chairman Ruth Waram commended Albert for her performance in her first appearance.
“Albert played well considering this was her first year playing rugby league,” Waram said.
Waram said Albert’s rise after such a short time in the sport was proof that there was talent in the country.
Waram said the Orchids had played as well as expected.
“Despite losing to Broncos there is a lot of room for improvement and the girls would have to prepare better for the coming Prime Ministers’ 13 curtain raiser against the Jillaroos.”
