ALCOHOL and drug abuse are contributing to the rise in violence and sexual offences in Port Moresby’s settlements, says Lands and Physical Planning minister Justin Tkatchenko.
He has pledged to work with the National Capital District metropolitan command office establish a special police taskforce unit to remove illegal beer shops and the distribution of illegal drugs in communities located in his Moresby South electorate.
“Sexual violence against women and also against our children, especially from the ages of two and three, who are being sexually abused by family members and by our people. What a disgrace. Totally uncalled for,” Tkatchenko said.
He said police and individuals in the city should act upon this sexual violence issue immediately.
“The report that I have received from the Kaugere health centre will shock you, of young children being physically raped by their own family members going up like you would not believe.”
He said anyone who commits such crime must feel the full force of the law.
