Police: Students among those posting nude pictures on social media

By SYLVESTER WEMURU
SCHOOL children and well-educated people are among those circulating pornographic pictures and videos of citizens to earn money, or to merely shame people they hate in public, police say.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hodges Ette, in charge of the Crimes directorate, told The National the illegal practice was one of the most reported complaints received by the Cyber Crime Unit in Port Moresby and other centres by the subjects of those pictures and videos.
Police have arrested three people so far and are investigating at least 10 other complaints reported, involving educated elites and school children, he said.
The complaints are from people whose nude pictures or videos are posted on social media without their consent and knowledge.
Some are posted usually by those they once had a relationship with, or people who for some reason want to ridicule them in public.
It is understood that there are groups of people who pay money to obtain these nude pictures which they then post on their websites.
Ette said they were aware of these social media groups.
Ette said the unit had trained investigators to attend to the complaints.
Their duty is to obtain “evidence” from the complainant of the existence of such pornographic materials.
The evidence will assist police in putting up a case in court.
The complainants may also be required to give evidence in court.
“It is a two-way thing when investigators conduct the investigation,” he said.
“The complainant must assist the police by providing information that relates to the complaint he or she reported to the police.”
He said to investigate complaints relating to electronic devices, the investigator needed to be have the skills to extract evidence from that. The unit was established three years ago and based at the Jackson airport police station.
He admitted that it would take time to be fully operational and attend to all complaints in an efficient and professional manner.
The office needs stationery, printing machines, computers, paper and inks to make their work easier.

  • does the cyber crime unit receive funds from the annual budget cut??? why are they saying they need stationary, inks, computers etc…????

  • Too much watching pornographic movies and images is the result in publishing own or others naked images on air. Also if the government can block off the access of pornography websites that are publishing their movies and images entering our country will be much more good. Its better to prevent than to cure.

  • There is moral decline in the current state of this country.
Everything becomes relative to the person based on his/her opinion or beliefs. There is no right and wrong any more.
I am sure our grandparents will be so ashamed and concern about this epidemic (ponography) that is drastically changing the course of this country.
From Primary School right up to the so call elites of this country are are so consumed with this lust, that eventually it brings about shame, discomfort, broken marriages, divorces, adultery and eventually death by some instances.
Today’s Generation have no standards. And I asked myself, why?
    Here’s the profound Answer:
The parents themselves have no standards, discipline is not enforced, kids became irrational and then do what they desire it’s best for them. As the results, many ended up many poor choices. When life gets tought, they contemplate suicide, as the only alternative route to get over the feeling of being ambarrased.
PNG was branded by so many as a Christian Nation.
To Take Back PNG, is to honestly evaluate our lives and make a complete u-turn and completely surrender ourselves to God.
Then and only, you will see a positive incline in our moral behavior.

  • The solution to this problem is the current unavailability of job opportunities around the country. The richer are trying to prey on poor or people who really need cash at the moment by doing this sick practices. Mainly the younger girls in tertiary or secondary schools and institutions.

  • The only solution to this Pandemic is the through the WORD OF GOD AND PRAYER. When we reading ambiguous news headline we must presented it our God, Don’t give the devil a chance. We are living in a challenging days where people are no longer reading the WORD OF GOD. They spend more time in social media……. MORE TIME TO THE WORLD( 95%) AND LESS TIME IN THE WORD OF GOD (5%), which is causing eroding status in our schools, families, churches. Let us not pretend that Papua New Guinea is not a Christian country. We must continue to pray and seek God’s spiritual intervention and He will heal our Country Population.
(2Chr 7:14) Don’t blame COVID 19 Pandemic as signboard for this news but for let us be realistic with every daily facts. DON’T LOOK TO THIS SITUATION AND MAKE A MOCKERY OUT OF IT BUT CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON GOD’S SOLUTION. We must not point fingers at our innocent students… Whose going to blame, the schools, families, churches or our government of the day??????????……………………………Let us look beyond the horizon and thick out of the box. Every Problem has a Solution and every Solution is subject to Change. Let us not pretend and acting goody, goody Papua New Guineans the reality is here already.Welcome to the light.
    facts for lives.

  • The only solution to this issue is just restrict the sites. Your eyes are the lamp of your own body. If your eyes are bad, then your whole body is full of darkness. How terrible is this???

  • Pre-TV I tried to import videos for my family. Took a long time for me to receive them but worthwhile when they arrived. They were vetted by a censorship group in Community Affairs I guess.
One they refused to let me have was BBC News reporting on the Falklands War when over 30 of my old regiment were killed in 1982 when their ship Sir Galahad was bombed.
I was told it was prohibited import and would be destroyed.
More annoyed when a friend of me told how he and friends would gather at one of the censors homes to watch any porn movies they had ‘destroyed’.

  • Hahaha well said Mr Castro, must have some background in human biology. I guess PNG has to grow up in this as planti bullshits and excuses on this topic cause everyone one is doing it in silence even the Law Enforcers na its just another joke making headlines in the media. It’s not a new thing and is very common in Developed world and with this easy access to Internet information, I just don’t know how you can control this issue.

  • Pornography is sin and the wages of sin is death. The destination is hell. How we try to explain in our own self ideas or philosophy or the world sees it as money making it still grated as sin. No compromise with it.

  • This is the cyber age and it comes with its pros and cons. there is no easy way to make this issue dissapear, because porn is readily available 24/7 you just need an internet connection..

  • I guess the big challenge is how to control it getting out of hand in PNG. We can say all sorts of great nice Godly words and bible quotes on the subject but words without action is meaningless.
Have heard in countries like Australia cases of serious phonographic nature like child photography websites are closely monitoring by the Police and can be tracked down to individuals. If we have this capabilities our Police can be able to enforce some control otherwise bai yumi toktok nating and expect miracles to happen.

  • As we all know, this illegal things were done mainly by an intellectuals. It should be under consideration for the the government to do away with those silly and corruptible things, which we were claimed to be a Christianity and yet do involved. My suggestion is that should the authority do away with those porn website in the country as well as carrying an effective investigations across the youths of this nation and the other adult people who they’re involved in such activities.
    thank you
