AN alert security guard helped foil a robbery at the Rimbunan Hijau Group’s headquarters in Port Moresby yesterday morning.

He shouted to a staff, who was carrying some cash and then opened the door to the office building to let him run inside.

Two raskols tried to kick open the door but it held. One fired three shots at the glass door but it also did not shatter.

The raskols then fled with their accomplices in a white utility vehicle, one of whom was keeping watch on security guards manning the main gate. Four to five raskols were involved in the incident, which occurred at about 11.40am in Gordons.

The group’s chief security manager, John Wakon, said the raskols were targeting an employee, who was carrying the RH Hypermarket’s weekend takings.

He said it appeared to be a well-planned attempt and would have involved an “insider”.

He said a raskol fired a shot to threaten the guards when the gang drove into the compound, alerting the guard stationed inside the office building.

“The guard saw the staff outside the door and shouted at him to run inside. “Luckily, no one was hurt,” he said, adding that the incident was over within a minute.

Wakon said the raskols could be the same ones who robbed the company of a large amount of money in June last year. Police recovered some spent shells from the scene.
