THE preliminary finals of the Pacific MMI Port Moresby Corporate snooker competition were played last week.

In A Grade, Starland Dragons 2 set up a date against minor premiers Starland Dragons 1 when they proved too good for GAL Topshooters winning the first four singles.

Newly-crowned Alotau Open and PNG champion Djorne Fong beat Joseph Ng 2-0, Ong Ben Haut recorded a 2-0 win over Poliap Pokanau, Robin Seeto used all his experience to overcome Arana Taviri 2-1 and Helen Samuel held off Elias Kamiak 2-0 to win in an exciting finish.

The do-or-die preliminary final saw Sunbird Aviation Falcons stretch Lamana 1 to the limit before bowing out of the season with a 3-4 loss.

Falcons got off to a great start with Ralph Kaina holding off Arua Simoi 2-1 and Noel Ramos taking care of Lamana boss Yiannis Nicolaou 2-1 as well to go to a 2-0 lead.

Lamana fought back in the next two singles to take the score to two games each.  Falcon’s captain Danny Earls proved too good for Toua Simoi winning 2-0 for a 3-2 lead going into the two doubles.

Falcons needed to win only one of the doubles to send Lamana packing for the season but folded under pressure when Arua Simoi potted the blue and pink to win the last doubles and the match 4-3.

Today Lamana 1 take on Topshooters in the sudden death match while  Dragons 2 meet big brother and minor premiers Dragons 1 with the winner getting the first spot in the grand final.
