PAPUA New Guinea’s 40-man 2013 Rugby League World Cup base squad will be finalised after positions in the management team have been advertised and filled.
Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) caretaker administrator Ivan Ravu confirmed this on Tuesday.
Selector roles would also be advertised.
“All positions will be advertised first. From selectors to the coach, every role involved with the team and its preparation,” Ravu said.
“Once the coach and team management is confirmed, we will sit down and go through the list submitted by the selectors, the coach will have to go through the squad, as he has to have his input first before it is finalised,” Ravu said.
“Players are not set in stone as such until we advertise positions.”
Ravu admitted that he could not set a date yet for the announcement of the squad as he was still in the process of tidying up after the Prime Minister’s match.
“We have yet to get quotes for the advertisements for the positions.”
He did confirm however that the announcement of the squad, dates and details of the lead-up preparations were also dependent on the confirmation of the details of the proposed matches with South Sydney, and the clubs from the Queensland In-trust Cup.
“We are still negotiating for the proposed lead-up matches early next year so the dates are subject to confirmation from the other parties.”
The administrator also warned the media not to preempt the squads, as it would cause confusion among the players.
“You shouldn’t preempt the squad and players as this will give players false hopes and disappointment when they don’t make the final squad.”
Ravu was referring to The National’s probable squad published last Friday, preempted only through the named players’ season-long Digicel Cup form.
The proposed calendar for the PNG Kumuls lead-up to the England World Cup as announced prior to the PMs XIII match, starts in January with the camp.
From that camp, 24 will be picked to travel to Sydney to play the Rabbitohs, and then hopefully two teams from the Queensland In-trust Cup on the way back home.
“The camp will run for about three weeks,” Ravu added.
