All the sport than the national capital can handle
PAPUA New Guineans, especially those living in Port Moresby, will be spoilt for choice when it comes to watching live international sports this weekend.
Whether by accident or by design, two sports will host matches starting tonight and carrying on into next week.
In cricket, Kenya are in town and play Papua New Guinea in two 50-over fixtures at Amini Park (Saturday and Monday); in soccer, the Nations Cup, which is the biggest event in terms of the number teams involved, will see PNG’s senior men look to raise their standing in the region with a strong performance in a competition that involves the best in Oceania including New Zealand; the other major event taking place are a set of Under-20 women’s football friendlies between hosts PNG, Japan and USA.
Port Moresby sports fans will also have a Digicel Cup match to go to on Sunday when the Vipers host the Hela Wigmen – this clash is sure to garner interest from the league fans out there given the SP Hunters are not playing in town.
Fans are basically spoiled for choice. Could this be part of the great sporting revolution Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko was referring to a year ago on the cusp of the Pacific Games? It certainly feel as if the tournaments are coming to the nations capital thick and fast.
This is good news for the athletes, the administrators, sponsors and fans because the momentum from last year is, in a way, continuing and bearing fruit.
Hopefully the organisers of these events as well as all those involved in one way or another can learn as much from the experience and be prepared for more events to come our way.
Of course there are other regional events on at this time that our athletes are competing in: athletics in Australia and weightlifting in Fiji.
We wish all teams and individuals the best and to give it their all.
