PNG Volleyball Federation (PNGVF) at its annual general meeting (AGM) has picked Alotau to host the 2012 Under 21 and Open national volleyball championships.
PNGVF vice-president Bernard Alu confirmed that the Milne Bay provincial capital would host the 2012 national volleyball championships.
“The 2012 championships will be held in November and that’s the appropriate time because most of the grade 10 and grade 12 students will have finished their exams and they can play volleyball,” Alu said.
The AGM which was held on Saturday evening at the Shady Rest Hotel in Port Moresby had only 11 of the 14 associations who participated in the championships present.
Alu when confirming the associations who attended said that the other three associations (including Alotau) could not make the meeting as they were playing their night matches at the same time.
“The associations that attended the AGM were Butibam, Tatana, Taikone, Fairfax, Popondetta, Sohe, Lakwaharu, Kiunga and Tabubil,” Alu said.
He said during the AGM they endorsed the staging of the junior national championships for either September or October.
The vice-president said the junior divisions to be played in the national championships would be the under-19, under-17 and under-15.
Alu said the PNGVF was also calling for expression of interest from qualified individuals to apply for the positions of secretary, vice-secretary and three executives board members.
“Five PNGVF members have resigned and at the moment we have people acting in these positions so we are now calling for individuals to apply,” he said.
Alu said discussions were held at AGM to look at all aspects of volleyball (indoor and outdoor) plus marketing, branding and developing volleyball and improving the technical aspect of the sport.
