The Goroka Rugby League received a timely boost of K20,000 on the eve of its grand final, thanks to Goroka MP Henry Ame, pictured.
Ame, who believes in sporting activities as an effective way to keep youths busy, presented the cheque to league president Pius Koko on Wednesday.
“The Goroka Lahanis won the Digicel Cup this year,” he said.
“We want to keep the cup and one of the many ways to do that is to support rugby league in Goroka.”
Ame commended the league’s management for running the competition prudently.
Ame said he would continue to support the league financially, so long as he was the Goroka MP.
He praised former president Maxie Roida for supporting the current management in vice-president Rawari Sabumei, secretary Robert Kapilo, judiciary chairman Ben Noel, selector Michael Homate with club representatives Jonah Soken and Donald Hape.
“As long as we have a good management, we must support the league as it goes into the finals, and in the years to come,” Agriculture and Livestock Vice-Minister Ame said
He challenged the management to work hard to bring the league to its former glory.
Koko thanked Ame and the Goroka District Development Authority for supporting the league.
“Your financial support comes at a time when we need money to play our finals and make presentations,” Koko said.
“I thank you for the support.”
The league will have the remaining grand final qualifier match tomorrow, where Keketu United take on CPL Norths in the men’s division.
The winners meet Labels Tigers, who are on standby for the grand final next weekend.
In the U20s, BOC Bullets will play Coffee Connections West in the grand final while in the women’s division, Genoka Pride lock horns with Gama Gusave in the decider.
