PAPUA New Guinea international and Port Moresby Viper Stargroth Amean says his goal is to be consistent in the upcoming Digicel Cup season and not worry about World Cup selection.
The 30-year-old told The National last week that his performances with the 2013 premiers were important, however, he was confident of retaining his spot in the national team.
“My focus is on playing consistent football with the Vipers,” the former SP Hunter said.
“This year’s Rugby League World Cup is still a long way away, so I’m not too concerned about it.
“I just want to maintain my form in the Digicel Cup, keep fit and World Cup selection will take care of itself.
“The Kumuls jumper is not owned by one person, it belongs to everyone.
“Everyone from the offseason leagues, Digicel Cup and international competitions has the right to wear the jumper, but they have to earn it.
“I’m experienced enough to know what it takes to get there, but it’s all about maintaining my form.”
Kumuls coach Michal Marum had earlier said that he would consider the current Kumuls who would be playing in the Digicel Cup this year.
Meanwhile, Amean said he was confident that the Vipers, who bowed out in the 2020 semifinals, would do better than last season.
“We’ve lost our experienced players like Enoch Maki, Brandon Gotuno, Ase Boas and Keven Appo to the Hunters, but I have confidence in our young players to step up,” he said. “It’s also up to the remaining experienced players like myself and captain Thompson Teteh to step up and lead them.”
