THE new judicial conduct law is an attack on the office of the chief justice and on fundamental precepts of the Constitution, Madang regional MP Sir Arnold Amet has said.
Sir Arnold, a former chief justice, said the incumbent government was the first one since independence to undermine the independence of the judiciary as one of the three key arms of the Westminster system.
“In response to demonstrations against the Judicial Conduct Act by students at the University of Papua New Guinea, Peter O’Neill gave a national address last Sunday to justify his continuing actions to trample on the letter and spirit of the PNG Constitution.
“Let me remind you that the founding fathers of this nation, led by Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, exercised great care in drawing up the Constitution, which has stood the test of time.”
