THE Amoa women’s team suffered their first loss of the tournament yesterday going down to New Caledonia 3-1 in an aggressive game of volleyball from both sides.

The home side started off well with a lead in the first set but service errors and poor blocking got the New Caledonians back into the game to win the first set 25-18.

In the second set the home side withstood the challenge but lost 25-17.

Using the height of power hitter Perpetua Awadu and experience of skipper Lois Garena, the home side fought back to win the third set 25-23.

A tight fourth set got the crowd behind the home team but service errors caused the PNG girls to give away the game 27-25.

Despite the loss, Garena remains positive of the team’s performance

“I think this was an aggressive game for us. New Caledonia was aggressive. Our girls did well to fight back from two sets down and I give credit to them,” Garena said.

She said they needed to stick to their game plan to win.

“I think our defence was there. I am sure our coaches will agree with us that we didn’t stick to our game plan and it cost us the game,” Garena said.

The side won its first match against Guam and will face Wallis and Futuna today.

Yesterday’s results:

American Samoa def Wallis and Futuna 3-0, Tahiti def Fiji 3-0 and New Caledonia def PNG 3-1.
